Tháng chín năm nay, tôi lại nhớ khoảng thời gian này ba mươi năm trước, bỏ việc làm tại Tektronic ở Beaverton, đi xuống học Kiến trúc lần thứ nhì tại Eugene, University of Oregon, năm 1979, chín năm sau ngày tôi học Kiến Trúc lần đầu tiên năm 1970 tại Trường Đại Học Kiến Trúc Saigon ... thật là dài hơi ..

tôi đi học kiến trúc .. một sáng mùa thu, tôi cầm tay tôi .. dắt tôi đi học KT thêm lần nữa, viện đại học oregon .. university of oregon, sáng muà thu, đầy nắng .. hiếm có .. indian summer ... hi hi, tôi nắm chặt tay tôi .. lầm lũi đi học, một mình ... trời hơi lành lạnh ...

Hôm qua ngồi suồt mấy tiếng, coi những chuyến bay đi Tampa, FL, tham dự Đại Hội Kiến Trúc Việt Nam kỳ 4, coi hotel, đặt vé máy bay, đặt hotel, tự nhiên nhớ và nghĩ rất nhiều đến thời đi học kiến trúc, học tại Saigon, tốt nghiệp, đi làm, đi tìm tự do, rồi đi làm, rồi đi học kiến trúc tại Mỹ, rồi tốt nghiệp graduate school.. rồi đi làm .. một thời gian dài ..

Vài năm sau này, tự nhiên cứ nằm mơ là mình chưa thi tú tài tại VN, quên không nộp đơn đi thi, rồi lại tự nhủ trong cơn mơ: đã tốt nghiệp bằng đại học Mỹ, nhầm nhò gí cái bằng tú tài VN… rồi cứ ngẩn ngơ trả lời trong cơn mơ: không có bằng tú tài, hai cái, làm sao đậu vào trường đại học kiến trúc, rồi lại tốt nghiệp kts nữa … không hiểu sao, thỉnh thoảng giấc mơ học hành như vậy, cứ trở lại …

i have to love to draw ...

Today, in looking back to my school studies of passive cooling, passive heating, design with nature in mind ... all the energy stuffs in the late 70s, early 80s, that energy crisis was hot and important in the presidency of Carter. Most of my school studies and researches were emphasized in green living, green architecture ... back to the nature, natural lighting, natural ventilation, solar design ... then the oil price deeped so low, the American way of living has made a wrong turn into more energy consumption in any means, any ways of living, make the whole undeveloped world to follow as China ... decades after those days, more bigger cars, then vans, suv's .. big houses, show off houses ... show off based on borrowing money, the whole world pumped money into US, let American importing more goods, more energy stuffs based on credits ... now, all the bad things are catching up with the Americans ..


Looking back for low energy designing.. i find out some old drawings, projects, research papers that are interesting ... my old studies seem to have good uses for now ..

 

Looking at my first year drawing 1970, to my last drawing in school 1981, I don't see much different in style or in my ability to draw. In my first year, of course I learned to draw under the teaching of many people, patrons. In my year at U of O, I drew just for show off my VN schooling background, I used watercolor, stretching wet paper on wooden boards, evenly putting few boards together for long , big drawing, carrying water bucket, wetting paper, rendu the blue sky with wet foam squeezer ... I did more nice drawings in fìlling my portfolio in searching for job later. People in US school used to laught at me with the comment: " I think the best school of architecture is in Saigon, VN " yeah !!! I was very proud to be graduated from the School of Architecture in Saigon. I did not have to do that kind of more pro-drawings, but I knew that was my last chance to enjoy, to draw, that I love the most.


My study could be very easy going in U of O, but I loved to find a hard way to learn, I learn more things that I did not learn before, and the courses were not available in VN school. I could being lazy, repeating what I have been learned and doing so well in VN school ..... I learned hard, got new things for myself, and I was proud of it. After the US school, came to work in many offices, they and I don't even have time and money for doing good drawings as I did in school ..Of course, studying hard earned me a Graduate Teaching Fellowship Scholarship in U of O.


Now, looking back, I feel lucky, knowing both hand drawing, and computer drawing. In US, after years and decades of looking at the "as real" picture rendering of the new projects, computer's too realistic rendering is not hot anymore or just continue to be hot in the un-deverloped countries that just learned how to use the computer and CAD program. In US, many firms, for the artistic value, and on going design schemes, they generate building in 3d model to get the selected views, then they render over by hand drawing, color pencil or water color for on going design presentation, providing design schemes that still could be modified, giving the easy-feeling to the clients, not the feeling of nailed down as closed coffin for no changes of design.


The Reedsport Middle School was an actual project, located along the Oregon coast. At that time frame, late 79-1981, the study of passive solar, passive cooling, natural light having their momentum. I applied all those passive applications into the school design and construction. I will return to my design final project in school, in other new post, studying again all the low energy, green, natural design ideas of that time.

 

 

Tôi học kiến trúc. Nhìn lại bài vẽ năm thứ nhất, 1970, môt trạm nghỉ chân nhỏ nơi cao nguyên như Đà Lạt, patron là anh Nguyễn trọng Tuấn KT65, có anh Trần văn Tiếu KT66 dậy tô điểm thêm, có thầy Tô công Văn, lúc đó dậy đánh bóng năm thứ nhất, ghé qua dậy đánh bóng … rồi bài design final ở trường kiến trúc U of O 1981, cũng không khác nhau mấy về trình độ rendu.

Tụi bên Mỹ, khi học KT, không vẽ giỏi bằng bên trường KTSG, tuy nhiên cũng có vài tên xuất sắc, nhưng pro như bên trường VN thì không có nhiều. Nên khi qua Mỹ học lại , có làm việc nhiều hơn cần phải làm, để biểu diễn cho Mỹ sợ, và có đồ pro, bỏ vô portfolio, đi kiếm việc làm sau này ..

Bài design, trường trung học Reedsport, là đồ án có thật của một thành phố nhỏ ngoài biển Oregon. Lấy program đó làm đồ án KT trong trường. Trường trung học đệ nhất cấp, hồi này VN goị là trung học cơ sở, của Mỹ, có khu văn phòng, phòng giáo sư, hội trường, các khối lớp học, thư viện, khu dậy học nghề, xưởng, thí nghiệm, hội trường vừa làm phòng ăn, có bếp lớn cho bữa ăn trưa toàn trường, có phòng vận động, thể thao trong nhà, kèm theo nơi tắm rửa, thay đồ, và cất giữ quần áo, dụng cụ.

Đồ án trường học này áp dụng passive solar heating, cooling, natural ventilation, natural lighting .. sẽ viết thêm về đồ án này

Cuối những năm 79, đầu 80, xứ Mỹ bị những biến cố về năng lượng, khan hiếm xăng, giá cao theo khủng hoảng toàn cẩu, nên khuynh hướng kiến trúc, kiến tạo, thiên về thiên nhiên, trở lại dung ánh sáng thiên nhiên, điều hoà không khí bằng thông thoáng tự nhiên, không tùy thuộc vào điện gas để sưởi và chạy máy lạnh nhiều nữa. Những bài design, nghiên cứu để tốt nghiệp graduate school, cao học của tôi toàn theo những chủ đề này. Trong những bài sau, sẽ coi lại các nghiên cứu cũ về thông thoáng, dùng năng lượng mặt trời này, mang ra ứng dụng lại cho hoàn cảnh ngày nay.. rất thích hợp.
